Stripers a still on at Flynn's Knoll. John Matteucci brought out Greg Snack from West Marine on Tuesday and limited out in a matter of hours. Chumming clams on the mussel beds seems to be the best game in town. Chris Devereaux had simmilar results fishing with his dad. The best was 32"s.

The JCAA Shark was postponed until this weekend. The Ocean was a bit snotty. Good Call guys! Friday was unfishable due to the northeaster, but winds were laying down Saturday even though seas remained high. The Greater Point Pleasant Charter Boat Association's Mako Mania Tournament was saved because Sunday's weather forecast was for safe conditions and entrants had the option to fish either day.

Only 12 out of 112 Mako Mania entrants tried to get offshore Saturday, but three turned back. The rest took a slow ride out and then reported fishable conditions that resulted in two makos brought in for weighing. Dandy Lion, owned by Bruce Cottelli of Manahawkin, had a 241-pounder that stood up for second even though lots of makos were weighed when the rest of the fleet fished Sunday. Tournament chairman Capt. Phil Dulanie said there were 22 makos over the tournament minimum of 66 inches, which means almost one boat in five caught one -- an excellent percentage.

Though only a few makos were caught last weekend, at least three were larger than the Mako Mania winner -- a 248-pounder taken on Sweeti to earn Jim Tapaccio of Hoboken the biggest pay-off. Two-time Mako Mania winner Capt. Scott Vigar scored again with a third place 228-pounder on his Free Spool from Atlantic Highlands. Dan Parish's Big Ones Lurk III weighed a 216 1/2-pound mako for fourth, and John Pelligrini brought in the fifth place 209 1/2-pounder. Rich Mawker's Rambler took sixth at 205 pounds. I have more details from last weeks shark report from Joe Pace: "Jay here are the first pictures of that shark that I, Kevin Meyerhoff , and Mark Solloway landed out at the monster ledge.

Hey guys just wanted to give you a fishing report.
305lb Thresher Shark caught out monster ledge.June 9th 2002  Joe"

Joe also told me that he had some nice fluke over the weekend. Fishing at buoy 2 he had a bunch of keepers up to 8lbs. Yea real nice Joe!! I need that picture too. I took his word because Joe Pace is a sharpie w/ the fluke.

Fluke
Capt. Stan Zagleski reported better fluking the past two days on his Elaine B. from Highlands. Ray Walsh of Springfield won Sunday's pool with a 7 1/4-pounder, and Phil Lindorfer had a 5-pounder yesterday. Ray Polakowski of Highlands was a pool winner last week with a 5-pound fluke, and he had a couple of 18-inchers in addition.

Capt. Rob Semkewyc noted some fluking improvement down the beach before the northeaster and saw his first near limit for the half-day Sea Hunter during the Thursday morning trip when Ryan Sholz of Ogdensburg boated seven up to 3.9 pounds.

Recent pool winners on the Sea Horse included Joe Painter of Bound Brook with a 5 1/4-pound fluke, and Al Kobayashi from Wayne at 4 pounds.

Steve Cooper of Red Bank boated a 4 1/2-pound fluke last Monday afternoon on the Atlantic Star, which was out in Friday morning's wind and rain when Carlo Viccininni of Kenilworth caught an identical fluke.

Capt. George Bachert said easterly winds and seas forced him to stay inside over the weekend when lots of shorts were caught on the Fishermen and high hooks had four to six keepers. John Husar of Belleville won Sunday's pool at 5 1/4 pounds.

As long as the weather cooperates the fishing has been good in general. The fluke are being caught in the rivers now on killies. Schupp's Landing weighed in a 350 lb thresher shark on Sunday. The water temps are adding to the chances that some more makos will move into the area for this weeks shark tounament sponsored by Jersey Coast Shark Anglers. http://www.jcsa.org/tournaments.htm

Jason Dixon fishing the surf weighed in an 18lb. He was live lining live bunkers bought at Bahrs Landing. The bunkers are in and if you can't snag or cast net your own, Bahrs Bait Shop has a tank stocked for the weekend. Call the shop to have your cell phone # added to our fresh bunker contact list.

The striper fishing was still very good this weekend. John Hayes said that Roamer Shoals was great on the incoming tide using clams. My brother Dave Cosgrove agreed as they both caught their limit on Sunday. Once the tide changed it was a different story.

The "Striper Special" did a great charter for the Ford Boys of London.

Congrats to Barry Heffernan of Highlands won the American Striper Association Sandy Hook Tournament, here at Bahrs, last month by ounces! Last week he trailered his 28-foot True World up to Point Judith, R.I., for last weekend's ASA Tournament, where he did the same thing.  After the bunker and clam he brought with him didn't do the job, Heffernan trolled parachute jigs and Willie Strehl of Port Monmouth boated a 42.54-pound striper to nip a 42.47-pounder in the 35-boat contest. Pat and Bob Kamienski were also in the crew.

The Sandy Hook division of the JCAA Fluke Tourney had its winning fish caught in the Navesink. The windy conditions stirred up the bay forcing many up the rivers. Rudy Kastner won some nice $ . Julian's Tackle weigh-in in Atlantic Highlands for the Sandy Hook port with 133 entries 1003 total entries state wide!

Captain Phil on the Tackle Box has been doing great on the knoll w/ clam bellies. Pete and Jimmy on the Hyper Striper have been limiting out on all of there trips last week first w/ bass and then over to fluke. I have spotted a few big bass on the bridges over the weekend. jason Dixon fished the surf at Monmouth Beach and weighed in a 7.2 lb weakfish (below). He was using a rubber shad.

While fluking in Raritan Bay and surrounding areas has been improving, deeper waters off the Shore continue to provide decent catches that include many large fish. Capt. Chris Hueth said Saturday wasn't good on his Big Mohawk from Belmar, and the wind made it tough to fish Sunday in 50-foot depths. However, yesterday there was a complete turnaround off Long Branch as everyone on the boats had fluke in their bags and some caught limits. Joe Yuka of Spring Lake Heights took a limit to 4 pounds, and the pool fish went 6 1/2 pounds

At Atlantic Highlands, Ed Steiger of North Arlington took over the lead in both monthly and seasonal pools on the Fishermen with a 8~-pound fluke caught Saturday. Fluking improved Sunday when the northwest wind came up and there was a decent drift off the park. Craig Colalillo of Belleville won the pool with a 4 3/4-pounder. Capt. Ron Santee has added Fridays to his weekend night striped bass schedule on the Fishermen and said last Friday was excellent as the boat limited out with 28 bass up to an 18-pounder for Len Borer of North Bergen. The bite Saturday night didn't occur until the end of the tide, but 22 bass were boated including a 16 1/2-pound pool winner for Sarah Bellman of Easton, Pa.

Capt. Russ Binns has scheduled additional Coast Boating School personal watercraft/safe boating courses as follows:
